Coming into the fight, Lemieux was 36–3 (32 KOs), while Stevens held a record of 29–5 (21 KOs). The fight began at a furious pace, with both men looking to land power shots. Stevens enjoyed some success with his counters, but Lemieux was the busier fighter and gradually began backing his opponent toward the ropes. In the third round, Lemieux unleashed a devastating left hook that landed flush on Stevens' chin. Stevens was knocked unconscious instantly and collapsed through the ropes, prompting the referee to wave off the contest without a count.
